Another ferry terminal opens at Mawa

Alternative terminal shut into a day of its inauguration

A new ferry terminal was put into operation on Sunday hours after an alternative terminal was closed into a day of its inauguration at Mawa in Munshiganj.
Operation of the alternative Mawa ferry terminal came to a halt on Sunday as its pontoon was badly damaged when a ferry hit an engine boat at the terminal.
Ferry service through 'Hrishibari Ferry Terminal' started around 6:00pm and it will ease the traffic congestion, said Sirajul Haque, manager of BIWTC of Mawa.
Earlier in the day, operation of the alternative Mawa ferry terminal came to a halt as its pontoon was badly damaged when a ferry hit an engine boat at the terminal.
The terminal was inaugurated at Mawa intersection around 7:00pm on Saturday after Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) suspended ferry service of all the terminals due to erosion in Padma.
Ferry service through the terminal was halted around 11:30 am, reports our Munshiganj correspondent quoting Sirajul.
Sirajul said the authorities were repairing a pontoon of the new terminal as water was entering into it through a number of cracks developed in it.
When workers were repairing the pontoon using an engine boat, the vessel was hit by a ferry and sunk into the river, he said.
Three workers were injured during the accident that badly damaged the pontoon, he added.
