'PM conspiring to shut most media'

BNP leader Rafiqul Islam Miah speaks at a human chain in front of the Jatiya Press Club in the capital on Sunday.
Lambasting a restriction on journalists to cover the events of the prime minister, BNP leader Rafiqul Islam Miah on Sunday expressed his apprehension that Sheikh Hasina is conspiring to shut down most of the media.
"We are apprehending that following in the footsteps of her father, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is conspiring to shut all media except for a few," the standing committee member said at a human chain in front of the Jatiya Press Club, reports Prothom Alo.
Jatiyatabadi Jubo Dal, the youth wing of the main opposition party, organised the programme demanding release of its President Moazzem Hossain Alal.
"In a democratic country, people have the rights to know what the government is doing," he added.
Referring to law and order, he said, "There is no rule of law in the country. All that is taking place is the law of Awami League and Sheikh Hasina. Those who plunder, commit corruption and steal are not arrested. But those taking to the streets for movement get arrested."
