JU cancels university day programmes

The authorities of Jahangirnagar University (JU) have cancelled all scheduled programmes taken to observe the university day on Thursday as a sign of respect to a student killed on Monday.
Zubair Ahmed, a fourth-year student of JU English department, succumbed to his injuries at a city hospital, 13 hours after he was brutally beaten up allegedly by activists of a faction of BCL as a sequel to a previous rivalry.
Meantime, the agitated students brought out a mourning procession on the university campus on Wednesday, wearing black badges demanding resignation of the university proctor and security officer for their alleged failure to ensure security of students.
In the face of the demand of the teachers and students, the authorities on Tuesday expelled three students for life from the university for their alleged involvement in beating dead Zubair.
But the demonstrators vowed to continue their agitation until JU Proctor Prof Arzu Miah and Chief Security Officer Azim Uddin resign.
Zubair Ahmed was a supporter of the Shafin-Sammo faction of JU unit Bangladesh Chhatra League.
After the murder, Shafin Ahmed, president of the suspended JU unit BCL committee, blamed the Shamim-Sharif group for carrying out the killing. He claims the faction is patronised by VC Prof Shariff Enamul Kabir himself.
Shamim, a Chhatra League activist of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall of the university, has denied the allegation.
The vice-chancellor however said he did not back any BCL faction. He claimed that Zubair was not killed in any infighting of the Chhatra League, a pro-Awami League student body.
