Demonstrators jostle with police in Narayanganj during protest against recent bus fare hike Wednesday.
At least 25 persons, including five policemen, were injured Wednesday when demonstrators clashed with the law enforcers during a protest in Narayanganj city against recent bus fare hike.
Beginning in the noon, the protest continued for half an hour until police dispersed the demonstrators, reports our Narayanganj correspondent.
Police said activists of Jatri Odhikar Sangrakkhan Forum (Commuters’ Right Protection Forum) held a rally in front of Shaheed Minar at Chashara protesting the recent hike of bus fare and demanding BRTC non-AC bus on the Dhaka-Narayanganj route.
They also brought out a procession but police obstructed it.
Infuriated, the processionists burled brickbats at the law enforcers prompting them to charge batons.
Police fired a number of teargas shells to disperse the protetsors, leaving 20 people injured.
Five policemen including Tobarak Ali, sub-inspector of Chashara police outpost, suffered minor injuries when the protestors threw brick chips at them.
Later, the forum leaders submitted a memorandum on their demands to the local deputy commissioner’s office.
Rafiur Rabbi, convener of Jatri Odhikar Sangrakkhan Forum, alleged that police charged truncheons on their peaceful programme.
Manjur Kader, officer-in-charge of Narayanganj Model Police Station, confirmed that police resisted the procession.
“We received an instruction from the higher authorities to obstruct the forum members if they tried to besiege the DC office,” the OC said.
The forum had earlier announced it would besiege the DC office to realise their demands.
