17 Jamaat men held in city

At least 17 leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami were arrested when they brought out three separate processions in the capital Wednesday minutes after the International Crimes Tribunal sent the party's former chief Ghulam Azam to jail custody.
The ICT, which has been dealing with the cases relating to charges of crimes against humanity committed during the country's 1971 Liberation War, sent Ghulam Azam to jail after his appearance before it Wednesday morning.
As the news spread, Jamaat men brought out processions in the capital's Motijheel, Purana Paltan and Ramna areas, said Md Masudur Rahman, additional deputy commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police.
Police dispersed the processions and arrested the 17 Jamaat men from the scenes, he said.
Of the arrestees, 10 were detained in Ramna area, five in Paltan while two in Motijheel, the police officer added.
Law enforcers have strengthened vigilance at different points in the capital to thwart any untoward incident.
Our Chittagong correspondent adds: Some 20 to 25 activists of Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS), the student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami, also brought out a procession in the city’s Probartak intersection with the slogans "Nara-e-Takbeer" and "Allah-o-Akbar".
A sub-inspector (SI) was injured during a chase and counter-chase between the ICS activists and police at Halishahar in the port city over the same issue.
SM Tanvir Arafat, assistant commissioner of Chittagong Metropolitan Police (Double-Mooring Zone), said about 50 to 60 ICS men tried to bring out a procession at Naya Bazar intersection in the city at 1:30pm soon after the ICT sent Ghulam Azam to jail custody.
Police rushed in and chased the activists. In reply, the ICS activists pelted brick chips at law enforcers leaving Oli (whose full name was not known immediately), a SI of Halishahar Police Station, injured.
He was admitted to Police Lines Hospital in Chittagong.
Md Ismail Hossain, officer-in-charge of Panchlaish Police Station, said the ICS men from Chittagong Government College and Hazi Md Mohsin College in the city brought out a sudden procession in Probartak intersection area at 1:00pm.
The demonstrators left the place before the law enforcers reached the scene, he said.
