Khulna OC 'closed' for torturing JCD men

The officer-in-charge of Khulna Sadar Police Station, S M Qamruzzaman, was closed on Monday for allegedly beating up a Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal activist during BNP's countrywide general strike on Sunday.

Assistant commissioner of Khulna Metropolitan Police Shakhawat Hossain told the OC was sent to police lines.

Qamruzzaman had allegedly tortured by hanging Chhatra Dal activist Mahmud-ul-Haque Tito from the ceiling. His colleagues – sub-inspectors and constables – allegedly aided him.

The OC, however, denied the allegations, saying Tito and his associate Ferdaus-ur-Rahman Munna were only blindfolded and threatened.

On Sunday, police detained them on charges of attacking police with petrol bombs in the district's Tutparha.

However, photographs of the incident were published in many national dailies on Monday.

Shakhawat said assistant sub-inspector of the same police station Kazi Rezaul Karim would oversee the station as acting chief.

Deputy commissioner Haider Ali is investigating the incident.
