1,275 accused for Sylhet clashes


Around 1,275 BNP activists have been accused in six cases filed by the police over the clashes in Sylhet during Sunday's countrywide shutdown enforced by the opposition party. 

The cases were filed on Sunday night accusing the BNP activists of vandalism, anarchy and assaulting law enforcers during the shutdown protesting disappearance of BNP's one of the organising secretaries and Sylhet district unit chief M Ilias Ali. 

Sylhet Kotwali Police Stations's officer in charge Ataur Rahman said that two cases accusing 600 members of the newly formed BNP-led 18-Party Alliance have been filed over the clashes at Jindabazar and Bandarbazar. 

Jalalabad Police Stations's officer in charge Gousul Hossain told that sub-inspector Abdul Latif filed a case under the speedy trial act accusing 475 BNP activists, out of whom 25 have been named, for assaulting police during the clashes at Tukerbazar. 

Another 200 opposition activists were accused in three cases filed at Bishwanath Police Station for trying to besiege the station and attacking police personnel, Sylhet police super Shakhawat Hossain said. 

At least 60 persons including police personnel have been injured during the clashes on Sunday.
