Selima, 14 others detained in city


Police have detained BNP's vice-president Selima Rahman and 14 other opposition activists in the capital, Dhaka, during the early hours of Monday's nationwide general strike. 

Gulshan Police Station officer in charge Rafiqul Islam told bdnews24.com they detained Rahman and nine other activists when they took out a procession in the area. 

Dhaka Metropolitan Mohila Dal president Sultana Ahmed, former MP Shahida Akter Rita and leaders Zeba Khan, Amena Khatun were among the detainees, he said. 

Before the detention, police chased the party activists when they gathered in front of Shanta Garments in the area to take out a procession in support of the countrywide shutdown. 

Amid police action, they got dispersed but took shelter behind the factory building. Police detained them from there. 

Meanwhile, security officials have kept the BNP headquarters cordoned off like the previous day. 

Riot cars were seen patrolling the area and a water canon was placed near the party headquarters in Naya Paltan.

A Rapid Action Battalion team also took position opposite the headquarters. 

BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, central leader Shamsuzzaman Dudu, Aman Ullah Aman, Ruhul Kabir Rizvi and other leaders assembled in front of the headquarters. 

Around 7am, police detained four persons from in front of the headquarters. Their identities could not be immediately known. 

Meanwhile, police charged with batons and foiled a Chhatra Dal attempt to take out a procession in front of the Dhaka Medical College Hospital in support of the party's countrywide lockdown. One activist was detained from there.
