Sohel Taj's resignation 'sad'

Deputy speaker Shawkat Ali has dubbed as 'upsetting' the resignation by Tanjim Ahmed, also known as Sohel Taj, as the MP of Gazipur-4 constituency.

"The Speaker is outside Dhaka now. The resignation would become effective after the Speaker gets the letter. He will take the decision on vacating the constituency," Ali told journalists at his residence on the parliament premises on Monday.

"Sohel Taj's resignation is very disheartening. We needed leaders like him in politics. But such incidents are a part of politics. The party will get over them."

Taj's personal aide Abu Kawser handed in the resignation to the Speaker's office on Monday morning, nearly three years after he had 'resigned' as a junior minister.

The letter, however, did not mention any reason behind the move.

Sohel Taj is currently staying in the United States. The MP for Gazipur-4 has recently written to the Cabinet Division asking it to take back his salary and other allowances as a state minister debited into his bank account despite his resignation in 2009.

The Cabinet Division says it has no record of his resignation and therefore continues to disburse his pay and perks.

He has often been offered ministerial protocol, which he refused leading to reports in the media.

The government has never clarified its position on Sohel Taj.
