Sohel Taj resigns as MP

Tanjim Ahmed, also known as Sohel Taj, handed in his resignation as an MP to the Speaker's office on Monday nearly three years after he had 'resigned' as a junior minister, a personal aide said.

Assistant Personal Secretary Abu Kawser told bdnews24.com Monday morning that he handed in the letter on behalf of the son of Bangladesh's Liberation War-time prime minister, Tajuddin Ahmed.

Kawser said the Speaker's private secretary Mohammad Shamim received the letter.

The former state minister for home showed no reasons for resigning from parliament.

Senior assistant secretary of the parliament secretariat (law) Nazmul Haque told  "We have received a letter related to his (Sohel Taj) resignation Monday morning. Now it will be scrutinised according to regulations."

Sohel Taj is currently staying in the United States, Kawser said.

The MP for Gazipur-4 has recently written to the Cabinet Division asking it to take back his salary and other allowances as a state minister debited into his bank account despite his resignation in 2009.

The Cabinet Division says it has no record of his resignation and therefore continues to disburse his pay and perks.

He has often been offered ministerial protocol, which he refused leading to reports in the media.

The government has never clarified its position on Sohel Taj.
