Odommo Chattagram Jolkanya at Theatre Festival

The audience enjoyed the play “Jolkanya”, staged by Arindam Natya Samproday, held on Sunday at the Shilpakala Academy in Chittagong.
“Jolkanya” was staged at the Theatre Festival organised by The Daily Star as part of its “Odommo Chattagram” (Indomitable Chittagong) Festival.
'Jolkanya' is a tale of the repressed fishermen living in a remote village by the sea. Written by Mannan Hira, the play was directed by Akbar Reza.
The play focuses on two women -- Sita and Bakul. While fishing in the deep sea, Sita's husband goes missing. Everyone considers him to be dead and Sita starts her life as a widow. Her days pass in agony -- recollecting the memories of her departed husband.
But to everyone's surprise, her husband returns, and Sita's elation knows no bound. However, this does not last long, as her husband goes missing again and Sita's dreams are shattered.
“Jolkanya” features another female character -- Bakul. After a fearful storm, Sita notices a woman on the shore. The woman introduces herself as Bakul. Sita gives her shelter and eventually wishes that Bakul would marry her brother, Brajhari. Brajhari too, is a fisherman.
Like Sita's husband, Brajhari goes fishing in the sea and meets a tragic end. To make matters worse, a moneylender shows up and claims their house, saying that the deceased owed him money.
Salma Hoque, in the audience, said that she was moved by the performance of Kankan Das who enacted the role of Sita.
Soumen Barua, another theatre enthusiast, said that he was thrilled by the performance of Bappa Majumder, as Sutradhar.
Director of the play Akbar Reza said, “'Jolkanya' is the 28th production of Arindom Natya Samproday. Chittagong is the largest coastal area in the country, and this play aims to present the stories of fishermen that the locals can relate to.”
Arindom Natya Samproday started its journey in 1974 with the production “Dando”, written by Shaheed Munier Chowdhury and directed by Mahtabur Rahman. It was first staged on September 16, 1974.
Arindam has staged 28 plays so far. It has also staged joint productions with Dhaka Theatre and Nagarik Natya Samproday. It also organised five theatre festivals and arranged seminars on theatre.
