The Dhaka airport Customs have effected yet another seizure of contraband gold.
A passenger flying in from Malaysia has been detained with six gold bars weighing 6.3 kgs.
Customs Deputy Director Mustafizur Rahman said Abdur Razzak, 34, arrived at Dhaka Shahjalal airport on a Malaysian Airlines flight around Sunday noon.
“We searched him as his movements aroused suspicion,” he said.
There has been a spurt in gold smuggling in recent months.
Airport authorities in both Dhaka and Chittagong have reported regular gold seizures.
Many say Bangladesh is only a conduit and the ultimate destination for this huge quantity of gold is India, where the yellow metal is in great demand.

Recent Indian government restrictions on gold imports to prevent foreign exchange outgo have led to rise in smuggling -- both directly to India and through Bangladesh.
Even a senior Trinamool Congress leader Abdul Rakib Biswas was caught smuggling 45 kgs of gold from Bangladesh on the outskirts of Kolkata and information from him led to seizure of another 42 kgs of gold smuggled earlier from Bangladesh.
