Lawyers’ strike in N’ganj

Bodies of senior lawyer Chandan Sarkar, city corporation councilor Nazrul Islam and five other people abducted from Narayanganj on Apr 27 were recovered three days later from the Shitalakhya river.

Leaders of the District Lawyers’ Association brought out a procession from in front of the Narayanganj Press Club around 6:30am on Sunday and it went round different parts of the city.

Many political and cultural organisations also joined the procession.

The marchers smashed a bus during the procession, which was followed by a rally.

Shops and businesses remained closed in the city. Vehicular traffic and train services were paralysed on the Dhaka-Narayanganj route.

Shutdown supporters stopped a Narayanganj-bound train in the Fatullah Railway Station around 7am, Narayanganj Railway Station Master Golam Mostafa said.

However, traffic on the Dhaka-Chittagong rote was normal.

Adequate policemen have been deployed at important points of the city to avoid possible trouble.

At the rally, District Lawyers’ Association President Sakhawat Hossain vented frustration over the failure of the law enforcers to identify and arrest those responsible for the murders.

Speakers demanded that the government take necessary measures to identify the criminals and bring them to book.

BNP and its key ally Jamaat-e-Islami also backed the daylong strike called by the lawyers association.

The Communist Party of Bangladesh, Bangladesher Samajtantrik Dal, Gono Sanghati, National Awami Party and other local platforms also extended their support for the strike.

Meanwhile, Narayanganj City Corporation councilors and employees started abstaining from work for 48 hours from Sunday demanding arrest of those involved in the abduction and murder of city councilor Nazrul Islam and six others.
However, healthcare workers and cleaners of the city corporation have not stopped their work.

Councillor Kamrul Hassan Munna said, “We are upset as the killers are still untraced.

“Twenty two out of 36 councillors have decided to refrain from work for 48 hours from Sunday after a meeting with the mayor,” he said.
