Ex-railway official lands in jail

A Chittagong Court has ordered a former senior official of Bangladesh Railway (eastern zone) to jail in two cases of corruption in recruitment.
Divisional Special Judge Ataur Rahman issued the order on Wednesday after Golam Kibria surrendered in court.

Kibria was the senior social welfare officer of the railway’s eastern zone.

He stands accused in two cases filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) over alleged irregularities in the ‘Fuel Checker’ recruitment tests, lawyer Mezbah Uddin Chowdhury said.

Earlier in February, two accused candidates Abul Kashem and Anisur Rahman were also sent to jail when they gave themselves up in court.

Former chief machinery engineer Hafizur Rahman Chowdhury and general manager Yusuf Ali Mridha were also ordered to prison when they surrendered in court on Apr 7 and Mar 3.

There are 13 cases against Kibria and Mridha over the irregularities in the recruitment test.

Deposition has started in one of the cases.
A big amount of cash was found in the car of former Railway Minister Suranjit Sengupta's assistant personal secretary Omar Faruq Talukder after it was stopped near the BGB's Peelkhana headquarters in the wee hours of Apr 9, 2012.

According to media, Tk 7 million was found in the car and the money had been reportedly collected from job seekers.

Mridha was also in the car. Later, he was suspended and Talukder was sacked.

The ACC has so far filed 14 cases against Mridha accusing him of irregularities in appointing over 1,000 employees in six different categories in Railway’s East Zone between 2010 and 2012.
