'Report on use of Bengali by May 15'

The High Court has ordered authorities to implement its instruction on using Bengali language in all spheres and report on it by May 15.
The bench of Justices Quazi Reza-Ul Hoque and ABM Altaf Hossain issued the order on Tuesday.

The bench on Feb 17 ordered that all sign boards, nameplates and number plates of vehicles to be written in Bengali language, except for those of foreign embassies and entities, in Bangladesh.

It also asked authorities to implement the order within one month.

In Tuesday’s order, the bench said English dailies can publish advertisements in English language.

It also included secretaries to the ministries of public administration and local government as defendants.

In the earlier rule, secretaries of law, home and cultural affairs and the cabinet secretary were asked to reply.

Writ petitioner Yunus Ali Akhand filed a contempt of court against the six secretaries on Apr 6 for not implementing the order in a month.
Deputy Attorney General Biswajit Roy said they had submitted two reports by the information secretary and cabinet secretary to the court. But the court was not satisfied with the reports.

He said, “The court after seeing the two reports said it seems that they did not take any measure except writing letters. They do not seem to be interested in implementing the order. If needed we will make all secretaries stand here if the order is not executed.”

The court asked for a report by May 15 on the implementation of the order, Roy said.

“Since the implementation of the order is a bit complicated the court has given time instead of issuing contempt of court rule," the deputy attorney general said.
