Ishwardi EPZ clash Cops among many injured

ISHWARDI: Several hundreds of people, including cops were injured as workers of two garment factories at Ishwardi Export Processing Zone engaged in a fierce clash with law enforcers Sunday.

Witnesses said the clash took place when the workers of two garment factories under Ishwardi EPZ were demonstrating to press home their demands of increasing salary and allowance.

At one stage, police charged batons on the agitating workers.

Police also fired tear shells to disperse the agitating workers. Besides, they also opened fire to bring the situation under control.

Pakshi Divisional Regional Manager (DRM) Pangkaj Kumar Saha told banglanews that the angry workers vandalized his vehicle during the clash.

Besides, authorities concerned of the EPZ declared five garment factories closed following the incident.

Apart from this, the situation became blistering as a rumor spread that a garment worker were killed by fire.

Workers of the EPZ told banglanews that the workers of the Roshita Knitwear Limited and Megatex Knitters started work abstention. Later, general manager of Megatex informed police.

On information, police rushed in and beat up mercilessly a worker named Rina and she was injured. As a result, the agitating workers locked into a clash with police.

Sources said in the clash several hundreds people, including police personnel, were injured in the clash.

The injured were rushed to different hospitals and clinics.
The additional police forces were deployed to avert the further untoward situation.
