1 killed in train-car collision in city

A man was killed and three persons were injured when a train hit a private car at Gandaria in the capital Saturday morning.
Abul Kalam Azad, officer-in-charge of Kadamtoli Police Station, said a Kamalapur-bound train from Narayanganj rammed the car while it was passing an unauthorised level crossing in Gandaria around 11:15am.
The train dragged the car 25 to 30 yards before it stopped.
A 50-year-old hotel employee Shahar Banu, who witnessed the scene, said at least three people, who were sitting on the engine of the train, fell on the ground after the collision.
One of them might have died, she said.
It could not be confirmed whether the deceased was a passer-by or a train passenger.
Three of the injured were admitted to different hospitals including Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Abdul Matin, a sub-assistant engineer of Bangladesh Railway, said the accident left the train engine and four bogies damaged.
A rescue engine reached the spot and hauled the damaged train to Kamalapur Railway Station around 1:15pm.
Police wrecker removed the mangled car from the rail tracks later, said Matin.
Locals claimed five roadside shops were also damaged while the train was dragging the private car.
Police picked up the car driver, Siraj Sharif, 58, from the spot.
