Malaysia okays Padma Bridge investment

Outgoing Malaysian High Commissioner to Dhaka Jamaluddin Sabeh Sunday categorically said the Malaysian cabinet approved the proposal to invest in much-talked-about Padma Bridge project.

The Malaysian envoy came up with the disclosure while talking to journalists after the farewell call on Foreign Minister Dr Dipu Moni at her office.

He said, “The Malaysian cabined has already endorsed the proposal approved after approval by the Bangladesh cabinet.”

The high commissioner added: “I hope the agreement will be signed.”

On October 10 in the last year, the World Bank had suspended its funding for the project following charges of corruption in river dredging, appointment of consultants and preliminary selections.

The World Bank earlier had promised $1.2-billion financing for the country’s longest bridge over the mighty river Padma that cuts off country’s southwest from the capital.

Regarding employment of Bangladeshi workers in his country, he told journalists that the existing workforce in Malaysia should get the opportunity first and then new recruitments can follow.

He added: “Eight thousand workers could not register themselves with the authorities but the number is very small figure.”

Sabeh said, “Half a million Bangladeshis are residing in Malaysia and compare to the figure 8,000 is very small.”

On the trade deficit, the high commissioner said the trade deficit between the two countries should be narrowed down.
