A
Chittagong court on Tuesday fixed March 7 for hearing on charge framing
against BNP leader Salauddin Quader Chowdhury in a case file for
vandalising vehicles in Sitakunda of Chittagong.
The court
also granted him bail in the case upon a bond of Tk 50,000 after
hearing a bail petition submitted on behalf of Salauddin, said Advocate
Enamul Hoque, a lawyer for Salauddin.
The BNP leader was produced before the court of Chittagong District and Sessions Judge Abdul Kuddus Mia around 11:00am.
While
submitting the bail prayer, Salauddin’s lawyers told the court that
their client’s name was not mentioned in the First Information Report.
His name was implicated in the charge-sheet on the basis of a statement of one of the arrestees to harass him, the lawyers said.
Nur
Mohammad, officer-in-charge of Sitakunda Police Station, said some BNP
activists put barricade on Dhaka-Chittagong highway and vandalised
vehicles at Banshbaria and Silimpur Paka Rasta on November 7, 2010.
Police arrested four persons from the spots, the OC said.
Two cases were filed under the Special Powers Act on November 8, 2010 with Sitakunda Police Station in this connection.
Meanwhile,
police picked up 20 supporters of Salauddin from the court premises on
Tuesday after a chase and counter chase when the BNP leader was produced
before the court.
SM Tanvir Arafat, assistant commissioner
(Detective branch) of Chittagong Metropolitan Police, said the DB
police nabbed four persons around 11:30am on charge of trying to carry
out sabotage.
Md Alamgir Hossain, officer-in-charge
(Enquiry) of Kotwali Police Station, said, Kotwali Police nabbed 16
persons around 11:45am as they were trying to create anarchy.
