8 academics get bail

A Dhaka court on Thursday granted bail to eight academics in a case filed against them on charge of distorting history of the War of Liberation in a textbook of Bangladesh Open University (BOU).

Metropolitan Magistrate Kamrunnahar Rumi passed the order upon a bond of Tk 10,000 with two grantors after the academics appeared before the court seeking bail in the case.

The teachers, who got the bail, are: BOU Vice Chancellor (VC) Prof RIM Aminur Rashid, Dhaka University finance department Prof Dr M Farid Ahmed, former BOU acting VC Md Ruhul Amin Akanda and former BOU director of printing and publication Dr Fazle Ali.

Bangladesh Islamic University BBA programme Chairman Dr Arshed Ali Matubbar, BOU Islamic studies department Associate Prof Md Abdur Rahim, BOU international relations department assistant Prof Md Kamal Uddin and BOU Islamic studies department lecturer Md Kutub Uddin are also among them.

Counsels for another two accused –Prof Ershadul Bari, former BOU vice chancellor, and Prof Ansaruzzaman, former BOU dean -- told the court that their clients had earlier obtained bail from the HC on different dates but they are yet to submit bail bonds to the trial court.

DU Pro-Vice Chancellor Dr Harun-or-Rashid filed the case against the 10 teachers with the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court on March 4.

Prof Harun, in the case statement, said he and DU political science department Chairman Dr Shawkat Ara Hossain wrote the Civics second paper of Higher Secondary Certificate that was published in 2000.

Later, the accused distorted history by deleting the name of Bangabandhu from the main copy and other points of Liberation War, he claimed.
