Students of Jagannath Hall of Dhaka University demonstrated for nearly three hours disrupting traffic movement in Shahbagh and adjoining areas Thursday to protest recent attack on minorities in Satkhira district.

Vehicular movement became normal after they withdrew their blockade at 1:45pm following a home ministry assurance for investigating the alleged attacks.

In the early hours of day, over 100 students of the hall blocked the road from Elephant Road to Matsya Bhaban for about one hour protesting attacks on minorities in Satkhira district over staging a play at a school in Kaliganj upazila of Dakshin Shreepur union.

Over 300 students resumed their demonstration at Shahbagh around 11:00am. They set fire to tyres and some other objects.

As hundreds of vehicles got stranded, a severe traffic gridlock spilling onto Elephant Road, Science Lab intersection, Farmgate and Matsya Bhaban continued for quite some time.

Police rushed to the spot and cordoned off the agitating students to ward off violence.

DU Vice-Chancellor Prof AAMS Arefin Siddique and Proctor Prof Dr MA Ali went there around 12:30pm and expressed solidarity with the agitating students.

Condemning the Satkhira incident and assuring the agitating students of urging the government to take stern action against the wrongdoers, they urged them to return to their dormitory.

After their assurance, a section of the demonstrators went back to their hall while the remaining continued the protest till 1:45pm.

Syed Nurul Islam, additional deputy commissioner (ADC) of Ramna Zone, informed that the Satkhira superintendent of police and officer-in-charge of Kaliganj Police Station have already been closed for negligence in their duties.

Palash Devnath, a post-graduate student of DU who witnessed the incident, told The Daily Star that the attacks on the minorities took place over four days from March 30 centring staging of a play at Fatehpur High School premises on March 27.
