CU train service resumes

This file photo shows a shuttle train of Chittagong University waiting for students to board.
The shuttle trains service of Chittagong University resumed Tuesday afternoon after authorities assured security for the train staff who kept off their duties in the wake of abduction of a driver the previous day.
The service resumed at 1:20pm when a train started for the campus from Battali area in the city.
Drivers however said that they would stop running trains if there is any further trouble, said Nazrul Islam, loco inspector of Chittagong railway.
The drivers stopped plying the shuttle trains after alleged activists of Islami Chhatra Shibir abducted Gopal Chandra, driver of a CU campus-bound train, around 7:50am amid an indefinite student strike on the campus. The driver was released six hours later.
As the train drivers kept off their duties fearing further attack, delegations of CU led by assistant proctor Rezaul Karim and CU railway authorities sat in a meeting at the railway office in the morning.
After getting assurance of security, the drivers agreed to resume the service.
Earlier, at least 40 CU students went to Battoli railway station around 7:30am and urged the authorities to resume the shuttle train service.
