NHRC may probe Narsingdi shootout

The National Human Rights Commission will probe the deaths of six men who, Rab claimed, died during a shootout in Narsingdi on Monday if all the commission members agree.
Dr Mizanur Rahman, the NHRC chief, informed this on Wednesday at the inaugural session of a regional workshop on human rights at Brac Centre in the city.
The commission has a principal not to accept any extrajudicial killing no matter what terms are used for it, he said, branding all kinds of extrajudicial killing as unacceptable in a democratic and civilised society.
“We thought that the extrajudicial killing has decreased. But we are worried and concerned at the recent two incidents of crossfire,” the chairman said without detailing further.
Extrajudicial killing is a threat to justice and rule of law, Dr Mizan, who taught law at Dhaka University, said.
Touching another point, the NHRC chairman said the commission has received a number of complaints from individuals that some real estate companies have occupied their arable land and homesteads using fictitious documents.
Saying that the commission is investigating the complaints, he informed that the NHRC has already summoned officials of some real estate companies to explain the allegations.
Meantime, addressing the programme, Law Minister Shafique Ahmed said his ministry is working to amend law to solve land disputes in the Chittagong Hill Tracts.
