Remove posters before DCC polls schedule CEC asks mayoral hopefuls

Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad
The chief election commissioner urged mayoral hopefuls on Wednesday to remove their posters, billboards and banners before announcement of the polls schedule of bifurcated Dhaka City Corporation.
“If they fail to do so before the announcement of the election schedule, they will have to bear the responsibilities of violating the electoral code of conduct,” warned Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad.
The CEC was talking to reporters after a meeting held at the EC Secretariat conference room with senior officials of law enforcement agencies to review the law and order situation in the city ahead of the polls.
The EC may announce the schedule for the polls by the middle of this month. The poll is expected to be held at the end of May.
After announcement of the schedule, the EC may give them 24 hours’ deadline to remove all those themselves, the CEC said.
"If they fail, we may engage other agencies to remove those materials. In that case, it may cost much and the people concerned will have to bear the expenditure," the CEC said.
Leaders of the ruling Awami League-led alliance and some non-partisan individuals have already geared up their campaign for the polls to the DCC north and south.
They have begun spending money on printing posters and digital banners and pasting and hanging them to publicise their desire to contest in the polls.
The meeting on Wednesday also discussed ways on how to take measures against the advanced electoral campaign.
The EC also sought opinion of officials of different law enforcement agencies regarding to law and order situation during the meeting.
Officials of intelligence agencies told the meeting that maintaining law and order situation will get much priority if main opposition BNP's leaders participate in the polls.
After the meeting, the CEC however expressed satisfaction with the prevailing law and order situation in the capital.
"We were apprised of the situation. We will sit again with them to chalk out the plan for maintaining law and order during the polls," Rakibuddin said.
The other election commissioners, home secretary, chiefs of police, Border Guard Bangladesh, Coast Guard, Rapid Action Battalion, Ansar and officials concerned were present at the meeting.
