BNP threatens tough movement against fuel price hike

Opposition BNP on Monday threatened to go for a tough movement after its November 15-16 demonstrations if the government does not withdraw its decision on fuel oil price hike.
The BNP standing committee meeting Sunday night decided to stage demonstrations in district towns on November 15 and in divisional headquarters on November 16 to protest the rise in fuel oil prices.
“We’ll go for a tougher movement if the government doesn’t withdraw its decision,’’ Fakhrul told a press briefing at the BNP central office.
He said although the prices of fuel oils have decreased in the international market, the government has hiked the prices thrice in the past six months.
He said the BNP standing committee apprehends that the fuel price hike will raise the cost of everything, including transportation.
Fakhrul said the BNP leaders at the BNP standing committee meeting strongly criticised the PM’s remarks on Khaleda Zia’s call for deployment of army in Narayanganj City Corporation elections.
They observed that Khaleda Zia had demanded the deployment of army in the NCC polls to check vote rigging and terrorism.
The prime minister’s remarks on army deployment in NCC polls revealed her ill-motive and lack of sensibility, the standing committee observed.
The standing committee condemned Lokman killing and filing of ‘false’ cases against Khairul Kabir Khokon. The meeting also expressed deep concern over killings and attacks in different places of the country.
Fakhrul said the standing committee decided to observe the death anniversary of Maulana Bhasani on November 17, Tarique Rahman’s birthday on November 19, Dr Milon’s death anniversary on November 27 and Anti-autocracy Day on December 6.
The party also formed a convening committee headed by Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain to observe the Victory Day.
