CHITTAGONG: A court in the port city on Tuesday framed charges against 11 people including Jamaat-e-Islami chief Motiur Rahman Nizami and former state minister for home Lutfozzaman Babar in connection with two cases related to sensational 10-truck arms haul back in 2004.
Chittagong Metropolitan Sessions Judge SM Mujibur Rahman framed the charges on Tuesday as soon as hearing resumed at 11.50am for the second day, reports private news channel ATN News.
The trial will begin on November 21 with recording of testimonies of witnesses as indictment of all 52 accused in the case, the judge said.
Nine of the 11 indicted and two other accused were produced in court.
Earlier on Monday, the prosecution put forward the charges against them for indictment.
The charge-framing date, which was earlier fixed on October 25, was deferred to Monday after an appeal for more time by the defence.
Hearing for the indictment for both the cases started on the day.
On April 2, 2004, police seized 10 trucks of weapons and ammunition from the Chittagong Urea Fertiliser Ltd (CUFL) jetty in Chittagong, marking the biggest ever arms haul in the country.
The two cases -- one for smuggling firearms and the other under the arms act -- were filed the next day with Karnaphuli Police Station against 43 people in this connection. However, names of two of the accused were dropped after they died.
Following submission of supplementary charge sheets earlier this year, the number of accused stood at 52 in the case filed for smuggling the firearms and 50 in the other case under the arms act.
