DHAKA: The Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) has taken initiatives to dispose of the long pending graft cases across the country to bring dynamism in its activities.
"We have already appointed a good number of lawyers across the country on temporary basis and also appointed some officials to reduce huge pressure of pending cases from the existing lawyers with a view to expediting the anti-graft activities," ACC Chairman Ghulam Rahman told BSS on Friday.
The commission has decided to go for strong legal battle against the corrupt persons in the courts, he said.
ACC cannot work properly for long, as it has been overburdened with a backlog of around 3000 graft cases and several thousands of complaints received by the commission.
Besides, the commission is now working on 9000 graft cases and allegations of the now defunct Bureau of Anti-Corruption Commission (BAC) aimed at reviving many of those having merits.
A total of 2887 graft cases filed during the period of ACC and BAC are now under trials across the country and, of those, the trials of 707 cases are pending with the High Court, ACC DG (legal and prosecution) Kamrul Hossain Molla said.
He also said, "A total of 600 graft cases, filed during the period of the ACC and BAC were disposed of this year."
As part of the initiatives of bringing dynamism in the commission activities, it also trained up its around 180 assistant director and deputy director level officers on the ACC related laws to develop their professional excellence to correctly deal with the graft cases.
The activities of the commission have slowed down as the existing Investigation Officers (IOs) can hardly handle all the pending cases. In the light of the problems faced by the commission, it has decided to appoint more IOs for speeding up its activities.
ACC had already appointed 84 more assistant directors to expedite the activities of the commission. The deputy directors, assistant directors and deputy assistant directors of the commission are now working as IOs. BSS
