Fog disrupts ferry services

Dhaka: Ferry service on Daulatdia-Paturia route remained suspended for eight and a half hours till Friday morning due to poor visibility caused by dense fog.
UNB Goalanda correspondent said five ferries have been stranded at Paturia ghat while five others in mid river with several hundred vehicles.
Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) Daulatdia and Paturia office sources said ferry Bir Srestha Hamidur Rahman, Shah Ali, Shah Paran, Shah Jalal and Bir Srestha Jahangir have been stranded at Paturia ghat since Thursday midnight.
Besides, ferry Bir Srestha Motiur Rahmna, Amanat Shah, Keramat Ali, Khan Jahan Ali and Kumari have been stranded in the mid river, causing sufferings to the passengers of different vehicles. The ferry service resumed at 8:45 am when the fog descended.
BIWTC Daulatdia office terminal supervisor Shariful Islam said a long tailback around 700 vehicles has been created at Daulatdia ghat due to disruption in ferry service.
UNB Munshiganj correspondent said ferry service on Maowa-Kewrakandi route has resumed after seven hours disruption Friday morning.
Ferry service remained suspended since 1:30 am Friday due to poor visibility caused by dense fog and it resumed at 9 am with the disappearance of fog, officials said.
Six ferries with 2000 passengers remained stranded in the mid Padma river due to dense fog. 
Disruption in ferry service created huge traffic congestion on both sides of the river causing sufferings to thousands of stranded passengers, sources said. UNB
