Cox’s Bazar JCD, Jubo Dal leaders killed as lawmen open fire

Two Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal and Jubo Dal leaders of Cox’s Bazar were killed when police and Border Guard Bangladesh troops opened fire on a procession of BNP and its front organisations in Chokoria upazila this afternoon.
Of the deceased, Badshah Mia, 25, was vice-president of Chokoria Municipality ward No. 2 unit of Jubo Dal while Mizanur Rahman, 22, was a member of Chokoria municipality unit Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal.
The clash ensued when around 200-300 activists brought out a procession in Chiringa area of the upazila around 3:30pm defying Section 144 imposed in the area.

The Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure bars the gathering of more than four people.
“The processionists, at one stage, attacked policemen stationed in the area and vandalised a BGB van,” Col Nazrul Islam, sector commander of Cox’s Bazar BGB, told The Daily Star.
At one stage, police sought help from BGB, and upon permission from Monowara Begum, executive magistrate of Chokoria upazila, both police and BGB opened fire on the marauding activists, he added.
Badshah died on the spot while Mizanur succumbed to his injuries after being rushed to Chokoria Upzila Health Complex, reports our correspondent.
Five other Judo Dal and JCD activists also received bullet wounds in the incident.
However, it is not clear yet whether bullets from BGB or police killed the activists, the executive magistrate said.
Police picked up eight activists of BNP and its front organisations from the spot in connection with the vandalism.
Meanwhile, BNP district unit President Md Shahjahan Chowdhury and General Secretary Advocate Shamim Ara Shapna claimed that BGB men opened fire on their procession without any provocation, leading to the deaths of two of their activists.
They also brought out a procession led by Lutfur Rahman Kajal, lawmaker from Cox’s Bazar-3 constituency, to protest the deaths.
