NHRC chief wary of 'disappearances'

Khagrachari: Nov 18 ()-The chief of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has said extrajudicial killings are taking place in the form of 'disappearances' from 'crossfire' in the past.
"The number of 'crossfire' has reduced in recent days while the people are still worried since the incidents of 'disappearance' have risen alarmingly," chairman Mizanur Rahman said on Friday, accusing the police and Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) of violating human rights.
He was speaking at the inaugural function of a two-day long conference of human-rights activists organised by Odhikar, a human-rights organisation.
He expressed grave concern over the recent incidents of 'disappearance'.
"After abduction, the whereabouts of the person remains unknown. Even the family members don't get any information of the body."
Mizanur urged the government to ensure that the members of law-enforcing agencies are in uniform while making arrests someone.
He said the government in its electoral pledge promised zero tolerance towards the crossfire--killings in so-called 'crossfire', 'encounter' and 'shootout', in common parlance.
"After the election, the foreign minister also pledged the same to the international community. But the government didn't live up to its pledge."
The NHRC chief further claimed that the violation of human rights was also taking place at individual level.
Chaired by Odhikar secretary Adilur Rahman Khan, the programme was addressed, among others, by Amnesty International's South Asia affairs senior researcher Abbas Foyez and Dublin-based international human rights organisation Front Line Defenders' Asia affairs coordinator Pokpong Lawansiri.
