AL may weigh BNP proposal for interim govt: Hasina

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday said her party might consider a probable proposal from BNP to form an interim government comprising lawmakers from the ruling alliance and the opposition to oversee the next general election.
“We can never accept a caretaker government of unelected persons. But we might consider the idea if BNP places a proposal in parliament about the interim government comprised of MPs,” Hasina was quoted as saying at a meeting with Jatiya Party Chairman HM Ershad at her Gono Bhaban residence.
The chief of JP, a key component of the ruling Awami League-led grand alliance, also discussed with the premier the latest political situation, especially in light of the opposition's planned March 12 rally in the city, the next general polls, price hike of essentials and construction of the Padma bridge, meeting sources told The Daily Star.
Hasina told Ershad that her party did not believe in politics of confrontation.
However, both leaders said that BNP should join parliament by shunning the “path of anarchy in the name of anti-government movement”.
Ziauddin Ahmed Bablu, a presidium member of JP, was also present at the hour-long closed-door meeting.
