17th Saarc summit begins in the Maldives

The 17th South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (Saarc) summit began in the Maldives on Thursday.
Presidents and prime ministers from Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan and Afghanistan are set to address the inaugural ceremony at a newly-built million-dollar two-storey convention centre.
According to diplomatic sources, poverty alleviation, economic cooperation, Saarc Development Fund, food security, connectivity, energy and climate change will be the main issues of discussion during the 2-day summit.
Earlier, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina arrived in the Maldives Wednesday afternoon with a 50-member delegation including four members of her family, Foreign Minister Dipu Moni, and Ambassador-at-large Muhammad Ziauddin.
