Hasina, Manmohan discuss Teesta deal, transit

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh have discussed in detail the stalled agreement on sharing of Teesta water and transit facilities for India.
The meeting was held at Dr Ali’s Restaurant, Shangri-La’s Villingi Resort in the Maldives on Thursday, nearly three hours ahead of the formal inauguration of the summit of the eight South Asian nations.
Briefing reporters, PM’s press secretary Abul Kalam Azad said the two leaders emphasised on the early signing of the strip map of remaining parts of the common border.
The agreement on water sharing of the Teesta River was due to be signed during Manmohan’s Dhaka visit on September 6 this year. But it could not be inked due to the last minute objection raised by Paschimbanga Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
Subsequently, transit facilities for India were held up by the Bangladesh side.
